History

It all began when Yvon Chouinard, later the founder of Patagonia, started forging pitons in 1957. The company quickly grew under the name Chouinard Equipment. As one of the co-founders of the free climbing movement, Chouinard moved away from classic rock pitons and soon relied on mobile protection such as nuts and "Friends." In 1989, the company was sold to employees and has since been called "Black Diamond."

BD is still primarily a climbing and skiing company and regularly introduces super innovative and practical products to the market. BD also excels in hiking and trail running products: their trekking poles were the first with an external clamping system, significantly more reliable, offering higher holding power, and easier to use in snow and ice. Few poles on the market offer such well-thought-out features and high reliability with top quality!

Black Diamond has also been manufacturing apparel for some time! For summer, we've selected some items for hiking and running; from running shorts to mid-layers. A super interesting item for us is the "Alpenglow Pro" Hoody. A wind and water-repellent mid-layer with full UV protection. Ideal for long, hot trails! In winter, we stock BD apparel for ski touring and snowshoeing.
Sustainability at Black Diamond
Many outdoor companies are committed to sustainability issues, and Black Diamond is really stepping up its game here. What I consider a real innovation is the GTT EMPEL waterproofing. Behind this cumbersome name is a patented process for PFC-free waterproofing that is applied without water consumption, while the fabric remains maximally breathable, has unparalleled abrasion resistance, and no longer requires re-waterproofing. A true revolution!
