OR Helium Regenjacke

Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket

Hardfacts:

At 180g, the OR Helium Rain Jacket is one of the lightest 2.5-layer jackets on the market. Thanks to the 30D outer material, the jacket can also handle an ultralight trekking backpack. The jacket packs down super small, about the size of an apple.
We use the jacket ourselves and took it on the Pacific Crest Trail, among other places.
The jacket is therefore an ideal go-to rain jacket for hiking and biking from spring to autumn.

Who is the jacket suitable for and for which tours?

The Helium is a top choice for ultralight fans who have to expect occasional rain showers and thunderstorms (e.g. on the PCT). The jacket is also great as an "always-on-hand" jacket for hikes and bike tours (day trips). Thanks to its mini pack size, the jacket fits even in the smallest backpack.

For which tours is the jacket not suitable?

Since we often get inquiries about whether the jacket is suitable for a multi-day tour in Scandinavia: Here's the answer: No.
The jacket is not suitable for continuous bad weather, and it was not built for that either. Here, 3-layer jackets with better ventilation options are more suitable. Of course, these are not as light, but they are better suited for longer periods of walking in persistent precipitation. From Outdoor Research, these would be, for example, the Foray (men's) or Aspire (women's) jackets. These types of jackets can be used all year round and are also suitable for demanding mountain and ski tours.

Conclusion:

The Helium Jacket from Outdoor Research is a top ultralight rain jacket with a mini pack size. It serves as minimalist rain and wind protection for (long-distance) hikes from spring to autumn in areas with occasional rainy weather.

Update 2026:
Since spring 2026, the new Helium UL jacket has been available. By using the new Dermizax 2.75 layer membrane, robustness and breathability could be further increased. And all this at a weight of only 165g (men's M).
