Jetboil Flash Review

 

The Jetboil Flash is a super efficient gas stove.

This stove is all about boiling water quickly, and the Flash does that in about 100 seconds at normal temperatures.

The entire system, including the 100g gas cartridge, can be stowed inside itself. The weighed actual weight without a gas cartridge is 370g. (Stove, pot, bowl)

We had the Flash with us on the Pacific Crest Trail in Northern California this year. Here are our experiences:

• ideal for 1-2 people
• Material: hard anodized aluminum, neoprene sleeve, plastic bowl and lid
• Volume: 1.0l. Normally 2 cups are cooked in it, which is approx. 0.5l
  

Advantages:

• the compact design is ideal for stowing in a backpack (dimensions: 104 mm x 180 mm)
• stable and insensitive to wind
• quite economical if you only boil the water briefly; we only used 4.5 100g cartridges in 36 trail days
• the integrated piezo ignition worked without problems
• the neoprene sleeve with handle can be easily removed for rinsing and put back on
• the lid is flexible and therefore lasts longer than comparable products
• super fast cooking time, thanks to the "Heat Indicator" you can also see immediately when the water starts to boil
• plastic bowl serves as protection for the heat exchanger during transport
  

 

Disadvantages:

• cannot be regulated very well, there is only full throttle. But this is unimportant for this area of use

• at cold temperatures, gas consumption logically increases (as with any stove)

• The Jetboil Flash can only be used with Jetboil products; if you want to use the stove with pots or pans from other manufacturers, you need the optionally available Jetboil "Pot Support".

Conclusion:

 

There are lighter stove/pot combos. However, other stoves use more gas and are more susceptible to wind. This relativizes the pure stove weight. The Jetboil Flash (139.90) in its current version is a super efficient gas stove that is ideal for long-distance hikes and mountaineering. You usually don't need more than that ;-)

The Flash is also available as the Flash Java (144.90) with an integrated coffee press and as a simpler and smaller version, the Zip (99.90).
