How do I find the right sleeping bag / quilt?

I want to offer you a little decision-making aid here:

 

1. Man/Woman, how tall? The sleeping bag must fit your body size! So not too big and not too small. Typically, special women's / S sizes are up to a height of 165cm, the regular size is 165 -185cm. And L / XL from 185cm. If you are on the borderline, take the larger one!

2. Area of use: How cold can it get on your trip? Please be realistic here, it can also be 0°C in the mountains in summer.

3. How sensitive am I to cold? Are you more of a cold-sensitive type? Then take the next warmer sleeping bag!


4. What do the temperature specifications of the EU standard mean?

According to the EU sleeping bag standard, the following values must be specified: Comfort temperature (Tcomf), Limit temperature (Tlim) and Extreme temperature (Textr).

I don't want to go into the details of the standard, but from practice, I can recommend that you always orient yourself by the comfort temperature first. With good sleeping bags, you can usually sleep well up to this temperature, provided you are healthy and not too sensitive to cold. With an inner liner / merino underwear / hat, you can extend the temperature range downwards.

I do not find the limit / extreme range relevant for the purchase decision.

Typical classifications:

Summer sleeping bag: Comfort range +5 to +10° (250, 300g down filling)

3-season sleeping bag: Comfort range +2 to 0° (400, 500g down filling) ----Typical Thru Hike sleeping bag / quilt
